WOLFPACK SWIMMING SPLASHES INTO ACTION

The Wolfpack Swim Team, one of the largest sports franchises at West Morris, hit the pool for its first 2014 season practice on November 17.

The team — 55 swimmers strong — is led by senior captains, Bella Beatrice, Maddy Evans, Cassie McKenna, Lucas Stalhut and Ryan Vinh.  The captains recently led the introductions at the team’s kick-off dinner, with Bella offering, “What’s great about the swim team is that we always get a lot of new swimmers you don’t know at first, but turn out great, and the upperclassmen who really step up.  I’ll bet we surprise a lot of opponents this year.”

Coming off last year’s combined .500 season, 3rd year head coach Jim Beatrice is confident the team will improve.  “For the first time, the team started dry-land training and a weights program in September under the supervision of the WMC’s strength coach, Chris DelPreore.  He’s done a great job, and when the kids hit the water, they’ll be stronger than ever.  We’ve also added a new coach, Jennifer Skiba, a 2006 WMC graduate and a former competitive swimming stand-out, who’s really capable of helping the swimmers improve on a technical level.”

The senior swimmers are relied on heavily, swimming in one or more event at every meet.  Pictured here are the coaches with all this year’s seniors.

The team trains five times a week at the Centenary College pool, and has their first meet on December 2 against Parsippany Hills.  Arch rival, Mendham – who the team bested last season – follows quickly on the schedule, December 5.  Coach Beatrice added “We have a core group of swimmers coming back, and a good group of freshman.  We are very excited about this team and can’t wait to get the season underway”.
