Recently the school has purchased some fancy shmancy new desks. Unfortunately these desks are only available in one classroom, Miss Raab’s room.

Mr. Ryan used his principal’s budget to test out the new desks.  He asked the teachers at a faculty meeting to write him an email on why one of them deserve new desks, and what they could do for their students.

Miss. Raab states “considering my old desks and the poor shape they were in, he didn’t even have to finish his sentence and I was emailing him from my cell phone with my proposal.”IMG_6545

She also told us that the new desks are very versatile in the sense that these desks can move in multiple ways. The desk top moves, the chair can swivel 360 degrees, and the whole desk itself can roll around on wheels. These aspects allow students to be able to turn and face their teacher no matter where they are in the room.

To some students, these desks seem more like toys than actual desks.  According to Miss. Raab, almost every class period she gets a student who asks if they could race the desks down the hall, or even use them for bumper cars.  It seems that the learning experience for some kids who are distracted easily have a hard time focusing in class, as they tend to constantly be playing with the desks and not listening to the class in front of them. Opposed to the other students who are capable of focusing in class, it has become a great way to effectively form rows, groups, etc..

Senior Ben Krulan, who has a class with Miss. Raab says, “the desks are a lot different than the other desks in the school.  They are a lot more fun and almost every part of the desk has a feature that other desks don’t have.”

While Katie Bryant, a Senior at WMC, says Miss. Raab’s desks are, “extremely effective for groups, instead of dragging a large desk over to a group, you can simply move yourself to where you want to go.  These desks make class go by a lot smoother, they also aren’t a hassle to quickly put back when class is over.”

Will Mr. Ryan be investing in these new desks for all of the classrooms over the next few years? Miss Raab said she’s not sure.  Rumors are spreading about whether or not this will happen.  Unfortunately, these desks are expensive, so it might be difficult to purchase these desks for all of our teachers.  Although, ultimately it’s up to Mr. Ryan on whether he thinks it’s worth it to purchase all new desks.

At the end of our interview, we asked Miss. Raab if hypothetically two serious journalists could race these new desks.  Unfortunately, Miss. Raab said no, just like to all her other students.  Claiming she would not want to lose privilege of having these awesome new desks.
