Another Amazin’ Comeback puts Mets 6 games up on the Nats

A season of great stories and great comebacks continued last night for the Mets as they took on the Nationals with a chance to push their division lead to six games with the recently much talked about Matt Harvey on the mound.

The game did not start well for Harvey as the Nationals struck first scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st off RBI singles from Clint Robinson and Ian Desmond.

But, the Mets got on the board in the following inning when David Wright hit a solo shot to left field. However, in the next half inning Anthony Rendon singled down the third base line driving home Michael Taylor and extending their lead to 3-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Michael Taylor hit a single to center with the bases loaded. The ball took a bad hop over the glove of Cespedes and rolled all the way to the wall allowing Taylor to round the bases and score, putting the Nats up 7-1 and having everyone feeling that the game was over.

But it was far from over as the Mets stormed back in the following inning. Wilmer Flores singled to center allowing Wright to score and loading the bases for Curtis Granderson who drew a walk making it 7-3 with Cespedes coming up. And as he has done so many times for the Mets since being acquired he came up clutch, hitting a scorching line drive down the third base line which cleared the bases bringing the Mets within one run.

Murphy and Wright followed with walks and brought up Lucas Duda with the bases remaining loaded. He then drew another walk (6th walk of the inning) which scored Cespedes and tied the game at 7 apiece and sending National fans into an angry frenzy.

But the next inning the big blow came as Terry Collins chose to have Kirk Nieuwenhuis pinch hit in the eighth against Nats closer Jonathan Papelbon and he came up big with a homerun to deep right field.

“We’re playing like we don’t have anything to lose, and that’s what we need to do,” Nieuwenhuis said. “I’m just going to enjoy the ride.”

What a ride it’s been for the Mets so far. They hope it will continue tomorrow night as they take on the Nats in the series finally seeking another sweep and hoping to push their lead to 7 games and put the nail in the coffin of the Nats.
