On Tuesday, September 15th, an African American teen was arrested by nine police officers in Stockton, California. According to Stockton Police the tenagers was Jaywalking. The cop pulled his baton out, and proceeded to forcefully arrest the teenager in an aggressive fashion. The man called for backup as the teenager sat down, sobbing and clenching his injured jaw.

A little bit later, eight more police officers arrived at the bus stop, and forced the injured teen to the ground. Four officers piled on top of him as they attached handcuffs. Edgar Avendaño’s camera failed to capture the rest of the situation, as another four police officers stood around the scene, blocking off any view of what is going on behind their backs. As the viral Youtube video ends, the teenager is seen sobbing as he is forced into the back of a vehicle.

Bystander Edgar Avendaño, who filmed the arrest wrote, “The cop was telling him to take a sit but the teen kept walking to his bus but the cop kept grabbing his arm & the kid took off the cop’s hand off his arm so the cop took out his baton & that’s when I started recording because everything happened too quick.”

Joe Silva, a spokesperson for the Stockton police department said, “If everyone would just learn to comply with the lawful orders from police officers and not try to hold or grab any of our weapons force would never have to be used.”

He went on to say that the officer was using a “weapons retention technique” in order to retrieve his baton from the teenager. According to Silva, “The teen cussed when ordered onto the sidewalk for safety reasons.”

Under California law, Jaywalking is an infraction, with fines up to $191. The teenager was held in custody and is currently undergoing trial in court for trespassing and resisting arrest.
