The Rise of Fantasy Sports

George Zutell

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to win a million dollars just for choosing a fantasy lineup? When I asked West Morris Central student Mark Maroney he told me

“It’s a waste of time. There’s better things I could be spending my money on but if i was guaranteed to win I would do it.”

Even though he isn’t a big fan of fantasy sport, the industry has taken off since the 2000’s and has grew to a 15 million dollar fanbase due to the founding of Fanduel(2009) and Draftkings(2012) which has put out advertising which has increased popularity.

How does fantasy sport work though? Well it starts with fans choosing real players from a draft to create a fantasy team. The players statistics from the game are tracked online to see who has done best. The players are able to track how their team is doing with various websites and apps. Some players play against friends in a league that they created and others join public leagues where they can compete against strangers. There are also some leagues where your can choose your team for a week and if your team doesn’t do well then you can create a new team the next week. It allows you to select different players that weren’t on your team the week before.

Even though you may have a favorite sport team, fantasy sports can change how you cheer for teams. If you have fantasy players that are not on your your hometown team you could want them to play well and focus on those game other than on your own team’s game. This can leave fans in a tough situation because they may be cheering for a team that they don’t like but has one of their fantasy players on it. Fantasy sports is able to give a new experience on sports and how you cheer for a team. It allows you to discover a new way of enjoying sports and getting yourself more involved with the game.
