WMC Athletes: Where are they now?

Erin Rubright, Staff Writer

Since this year’s graduating class was freshman, there have been a handful of WMC athletes who have gone on to play at the collegiate level and achieved major success.

On average, only about 6% of male athletes and 8% of females will go onto play a sport in college. There are some cases that differ drastically from this average such as the 23.1% of females that go onto play ice hockey and the 12%of males that go onto play lacrosse.

The West Morris Central athletic programs have given student athletes tremendous platforms to continue their careers. The coaches, teammates, and competition that athletes encounter at WMC are some of the main reasons why our athletes have been able to excel.

In 2014, the graduating class had 16 athletes commit to play in college over ten sports. The class of 2015 graduated 21 athletes who would go onto play over ten sports. 2016 had 12 graduates continue their athletic careers over 8 sports. As for the 2017 class, there have been 10 commits so far over 5 sports.

Not only have there been WMC athletes to compete in college but they have excelled.

Kylene Cochrane (2014), a dual athlete in cross country and track and field at The University of Pennsylvania, was a 2016 NCAA outdoor east regional qualifier in her event for track. Emily Rubright (2014) of Messiah College field hockey won the 2016 DIII National Championship this past fall.

Kayla Mosser (2015) of TCNJ field hockey mad a final four appearance in her first year with the program. Tommy Hayes (2015) who competes for Fordham’s golf team competed in every tournament during his first season which was only done by four other players. Nicole Frank (2015) appeared in the DIII Championship Regional Tournament as part of the TCNJ softball team.

Jackson Meyer (2016) of Centre College joined his soccer team in their first round appearance of the NCAA Tournament. Brooke Solsky (2016) led the Boston College fencing team at the Northeast Fencing Conference meet to an undefeated final and a personal score of 14-3.

The 2017 class has some great athletes in their midst and it’s exciting to see what accolades they can achieve in the future.
