Chargers, Colts, 49ers, Saints Victorious in Wild Card Weekend

Wild Card weekend brought quite a bit of excitement to football fans across the nation. The weekend included two game winning field goals and the second largest comeback in the history of the NFL playoffs as the Colts came back from a 21 point halftime deficit to win 45-44 over the Chiefs.

Here is how it happened:

Chargers at Bengals

The only game that did not come down to a late fourth quarter drive included a solid game out of Philip Rivers who completed twelve of his sixteen passes and did not commit a turnover. Ronnie Brown capped off the Chargers scoring with a 58 yard touchdown run with just over two minutes left to secure the game in San Diego’s favor. Cincinnati went into the half with a 10-7 lead which was quickly diminished in the second half when the Chargers scored 20 unanswered points giving them a 27-10 victory.

49ers at Green Bay

Lambeau Field in January always causes problems for opponents as the extreme cold always factors into the game. The Packers, who are predominantly a passing team, ran the ball 31 times in comparison to 26 pass plays. The 49ers stuck to their usual game plan of using Colin kaepernick’s running and throwing abilities to combo with veteran running back Frank Gore. Kaepernick stole the show as he threw for 227 yards and ran for 98 more. The 49ers were victorious after Phil Dawson drilled a 33 yard field goal as time expired.

Chiefs at Colts

Early on, it appeared as if the Chiefs would coast into the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. That is until Andrew Luck got hot. Known for his clutch play and fourth quarter comebacks, Luck lead the Colts back from a 31-10 halftime deficit to win 45-44. Indianapolis took a 41-38 lead in the fourth quarter as Luck recovered teammate Donald Brown’s fumble and ran it in for a touchdown. Luck also threw for 443 yards and 4 touchdowns. T.Y Hilton also had a big game for the Colts as he caught 13 balls for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Saints at Eagles

Despite two turnovers, Drew brees and the Saints showed a great deal of resilience as they battled back from a late fourth quarter deficit to win 26-24. Shayne Graham connected on a 32 yard field goal as time expired to send the Saints to Carolina for the next round. Mark Ingram had a big day for New orleans on the ground as he finished the game with 97 rushing yards and a touchdown.
