Rams to Workout Johnny Manziel

Rams+to+Workout+Johnny+Manziel

The St. Louis Rams surprised the football world when they announced yesterday they would be working out Texas A&M studs Jake Mathews, Mike Evans and… Johnny Manziel?!

The Rams, who hold both the second and thirteen overall picks in this year’s draft, were not projected by any of the experts to draft or even be looking at a quarterback with either of these two picks considering they still have young gun Sam Bradford behind center.

I have speculated that the Rams may venture out and take Manziel who would certainly be a luxury and not a necessity pick, due to Bradford’s inability to stay on the field throughout his young career.

Manziel would fit perfectly in Coach Fisher’s offense and can you picture Manziel on that turf? Fast fast. If the Rams don’t have faith in Bradford, they should draft Manziel. My reasoning behind this is that the Rams did well last year without Bradford for a good part of the year. They bring a lot of guys back and look to actually be better this year than last so you have to assume they wouldn’t have a top ten pick to grab one of the elite quarterbacks in next year’s draft.

Even though I wouldn’t be as shocked as others if the Rams do decide to draft Manziel, I don’t think they should pick him. They need an offensive tackle and a real number one receiver. Tavon Austin is great but he should be a number two on a good team. They have depth but not that one go to guy.

Bradford has been on his back way too much during his short career and that’s probably why he has been injured and out so many times. A quarterback, especially a young one, cannot succeed without protection. He also hasn’t had a solid number one receiver for the entire time he has been there. He’s had a receiver core full of guys who should be No. 3 or No. 4 options on a good team.

With that being said, even though most experts had Auburn Tackle Greg Robinson slotted in at two for the Rams, I think they should draft receiver Sammy Watkins out of Clemson. He would step in right away and have a major impact. Than with their thirteen pick they should draft Notre Dame Tackle Zach Martin. These two picks would sure up the teams major needs and give Bradford no reason not to succeed. If Bradford still doesn’t execute, then the team doesn’t have to pick up his option for the following season and let him go and move in a different direction. This would mean looking for a quarterback in next year’s draft which is a very deep quarterback class. They may need to move up depending on how they do next year to get one of the few elites in next year’s draft, but if Bradford doesn’t pan out, I am sure they will do what’s necessary to get their future quarterback in next year’s draft.
