After years of disputing the BCS system, a playoff was finally instilled into college football. Four teams playing in two semifinal games to determine who would advance and be the true national champion.

The wait is over for college football fans as they now can end arguments about who should be picked for the national championship. The NCAA announced that this year would be the first college football playoff in which there would be two semifinals played on New Years day, the locations to be the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. A committee was assembled of former players and current college football analysts to decide who the top four teams would be.

This years’ playoff games saw Oregon–the champions of the Pac-12 conference–and Florida State–winners of the ACC–face off at the Rose Bowl. In the Sugar Bowl, the heavily favored winners of the SEC Alabama took on the underrated Ohio State team led by third string quarterback Cardale Jones. He spoke about Ohio State’s improbable run to the championship.

“Late August, around camp, everybody counted us out when our Heisman Trophy quarterback went down, and then when the first College Football Playoff rankings came out, we was like no. 16 or 17,” Jones said. “Long story short, we weren’t supposed to be here.”

Ohio State’s star running back Ezekiel Elliott also spoke about Ohio State’s season.

“With all the stuff we went through to get here, it’s just crazy,” Elliott said. “It doesn’t feel real.”

The Rose Bowl has proved itself a classic among viewers and this year was no different. Florida State came into the game undefeated, however some of their victories were unconvincing and left many experts doubting whether they could keep up with the nation’s top teams. Oregon has been lead by star quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Heisman trophy winner had one of the single greatest seasons in college football history.

Many anticipated that the rose bowl would be an offensive explosion from both sides but that was simply not the case. The first half saw neither team score a touchdown and it appeared that the game would remain a stalemate for it’s duration. According to CBSSports.com, both quarterbacks threw one interception in the game. In the second half, Oregon came out motivated to acquire the lead, and the ended up moving ahead by 39 points to win the Rose Bowl.

The Sugar Bowl proved to be the more intriguing of the two games. Alabama was heavily favored coming out of the strong SEC conference. Ohio State was cast off at the beginning of the season when star quarterback Braxton Miller injured his shoulder and missed the entire season. The game was full excitement, there were trick plays going for touchdowns and a team inspired by their own third string quarterback Cardale Jones. The game ended 42 to 35 in favor of Ohio State. Alabama surprisingly were unable to stop Ohio State on defense. Quarterback Blake Sims threw three interceptions making it very difficult for Alabama to sustain long drives.

A huge upset shows what college football has been missing for a long time, which is having the right to control your own destiny and play for a chance to get into the National Championship.

The National Championship game will be a great game–the Ohio State Buckeyes led by their third string quarterback and likeable famous coach taking on the fast tempo and spirited Oregon Ducks. Very few could have predicted this matchup especially considering almost everyone expected the championship to feature at least one SEC team.

The success of the 2014-2015 playoffs has quelled the college-football controversies–college football fans are glad that the BCS is long gone.
