Hope for Nepal

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit almost 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu on April 25 killing more than 7,000 people, 14,021 people were injured, crumbling buildings and devastating much of the city. The ground shook beyond Nepal’s borders, into Tibet and northern India, in one of the worst natural disasters to strike the Himalayas in years.  About 100 people are reported to have died in neighbouring India, Tibet, and Bangladesh. Stone temples in Kathmandu crumbled, including the iconic Dharahara tower. Other buildings slumped sideways or fell to the ground.

On Mount Everest, the earthquake triggered an avalanche that swept into the base camp. At least 10 people are thought to have been killed on the mountain.

Aid pledges are pouring in: $10 million from the US, $7.6 million from the UK, and $3.9 million from Australia, among others. But, the sad reality is that Nepal is ill-equipped to make full use of these resources.

On May 4th, US Marines arrived in Nepal to deliver aid to millions of people affected by this disaster.

Paul Kennedy, the commanding general of the III Marine Expeditionary Brigade stationed in Okinawa, tells National P

 

“Probably the most pressing need is shelter,” he said. “We’re going to start pushing these shelters out to the most remote areas so people can get under cover before these monsoons kick in in about six weeks.”

 

The New York Times reports that despite the emergency, the Nepalese government has insisted on following regular customs procedures.
