Are “promposals” the new proposals?

This student's "sweet" promposalThe extreme proposals, or “promposals”, from one person asking another to prom is a rapid trend sweeping the nation.

“Promposals” can be as simplistic as passing a note or as elaborate as proposing with a flash mob with 10 friends in nothing but their underwear in front of the whole school, ending up in utter humiliation or roaring applause.

Asking someone to prom now takes a lot more than just simply asking them. This movement has students pop the question with food, animals, songs, dances, and so much more. Promposals can involve a simple dance routine or a spelling with food. It is expected to be creative, original, and absolutely impossible to say no to. We’re not sure who launched this new-wave promposal trend, but we’re thinking it’s going to last for a long time.

The bars have been set quite high for the students faced with asking the daunting question. For some unknown reason, it is suggested or assumed that the male of the relationship must ask the question, much like in an actual proposal. But, similarly to the proposal in our generation, this assumption is subject to change.

We asked some students of WMC what their thoughts and opinions were on promposing. Senior Jake Alpaugh said that,

“It’s a smart idea, but overexaggerated.” This student’s “sweet” promposal

Senior Gabi Jasek added,

“They’re cute if they’re done right.”

It seems that everyone has the same opinion that they are in support of promposals, only if they’re done in a harmless, cute or creative way.

With that being said, an example of just how crazy, wild, and absurd these promposals can be is one done locally in Roxbury. Kolyn Ryan, a senior at Roxbury High School, described the event in detail.

“So Sean, my boyfriend, surprised me one night after dance and he said he was taking me to dinner. He told me he was running low on gas and asked if I would drive.

We started driving and I’m going down the street and all of a sudden these cop lights go on. I’m literally like ‘what the hell did I do?!’

The cop comes to my window, I knew him, he’s my kickboxing teacher, and he tells me that I didn’t stop long enough at the stop sign. He asks for my license and registration, I hand it to him, and he goes back to his car to check some stuff; meanwhile, this whole time Sean is videotaping all of this because he thinks it’s so funny.

The “ticket” says, “Kolyn, will you go to prom with me?” and he hands me a rose too! I was so mad, you have no idea.”

Although some of these promposals are ridiculous and outrageous, it is undeniable that these enormous displays are quite a sight for everyone to witness.scary prom
