Have you ever heard of those obscure cases in which a company is sued for something that they should not have been sued for? Not too long ago, Dunkin Donuts was sued for the same silly reasoning.

According to CNN news, a woman fell in a New Jersey Dunkin Donuts parking lot, causing her to spill scalding hot coffee all over herself. She also got cuts and received scrapes from the fall onto the hard, rocky asphalt. Her attorney stated that she suffered back and shoulder injuries which will require surgery.

She has now settled for a lawsuit for $522k, which is a little over half a million dollars. Her attorney said “Basic standards for parking lot maintenance are for the protection and safety of the general public. Allowing a metal spike to protrude out of the asphalt clearly violates these standards.”

Although it is never a replacement for health, the plaintiff is hopeful that the settlement will serve to remind business owners that their customer’s safety should always be a priority. As other cases have been more concerned about the packaging and quality of the Dunkin’ product; this case has been more concerned on how adequately the Dunkin’ Donuts public space was kept. In the end was this case one that was based on the lack of common sense and cautiousness of an individual or basic morals of an establishment?
