Hamilton Cast Provides Criticism to Vice President Mike Pence

On November 18th, future vice-president Mike Pence visited Broadway to see the show Hamilton, and received criticism from not only the audience, but the cast as well.

A musical based on the work of immigrants and their contributions to a community and nation, Hamilton has become a nation-wide success and obsession with Broadway gurus, high school theater kids, and the everyday citizen. With a plotline like Hamilton’s, it’s no wonder the cast had some unscripted words for Mike Pence, whose running mate, Donald J. Trump, focused on immigration policies throughout his campaign.

Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in the musical, addressed Mike Pence as he was leaving the theater.

“Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at ‘Hamilton: An American Musical.’ We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir”.

Although Pence was walking away while Dixon was speaking, it is clear that he heard the message; millions of people have retweeted and liked videos of the occurrence.

As the shows go on for Hamilton, many hope that the cast’s message will be as successful as their musical, which has won 11 Tony Awards, and the hearts of millions.

Alyssa Spady, a student at WMC, has taken an interesting opinion on the topic.

“I think it was a smart way to convey their message but the guy that said it has had a past of saying some derogatory things, so I guess you need to practice what you preach”.

Dixon has been linked to some questionable tweets but has maintained his view on immigration and other hot-button topics that have been mentioned throughout this election.
