Last Thursday, the Senate voted on a package that would ensure relief to Hurricane Harvey victims as well as raise the debt ceiling in order to prepare for spending with the damage that is coming with Hurricane Irma, and any anticipated damage with Hurricane Jose who is gaining strength in the Atlantic. The package was passed with a voting of 80-17, all nos were found to be Republican. Those nos do not come to a surprise, historically, Republicans feel that the debt ceiling should not raise it, rather reconstruct taxes to help gain the revenue to pay for these things. While the package itself does not concern Republicans, the main problem is in the means that President went along with raising the debt ceiling. President Trump worked alongside Senate and House minority leaders, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to strike a deal that would raise the     debt ceiling for three months. This ensures that the relief for any and all natural disaster relief that may be needed in the next few months. Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan (R-WI) have both spoken out against the deal with Trump. Speaker Paul Ryan has since spoken out saying that President Trump has begun to play politics with the debt ceiling. The deal has sent waves within the Republican party, but has now given Democrats a bargaining chip for further issues that may face the Senate and/or House. One that has many people talking is the repeal of DACA. This repealing brings pressure on congress to find an alternative to the bill set in place by former President, Barack Obama. Many believe that Democrats will use the debt ceiling deal as a way to bring back DACA which was repealed earlier this week.
