Looking Ahead to the World Series

The World Series begins tonight with the Boston Red Sox set to host the St. Louis Cardinals at legendary Fenway Park to determine who the best baseball team in the world is.

In 2004, these two teams met in the World Series in which the Red Sox won in an impressive four game sweep. The Cardinals are looking for revenge this time around.

Each team had the highest regular season record in their respected leagues, so it should be a very good series considering you have, statistically, the best two team in baseball. Each team ranked first in on base percentage and second in team average in their respective leagues in the regular season, and both carried that dominance into the playoffs.

The biggest Dilemma for the Red Sox, as it is usually for every AL team who plays an NL foe, is what to do with their Designated Hitter. David Ortiz is the Red Sox’s DH and their best hitter as well as their leader. Red Sox manager John Farrell will have to find out a way to get his slugger on the field when on the road.  Even with Ortiz out of the lineup, the Red Sox still have a platoon of sluggers with playoff experience (Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli and Dustin Pedroia) who can straight rope the ball.

St. Louis will be relying heavily on its veterans Carlos Beltran and Matt Holiday to lead the charge and on All-Star 2nd baseman Matt Carpenter to be a spark plug both offensively and defensively. Young outfield sensation Allen Craig is returning from an injury so it will be interesting to see how he performs.

Both teams are very similar. Both are have dominant starting pitching. Both have deep bullpens. Both have a team full of guys who can crush the ball. Both have incredibly loyal fan bases that show out. It will be interesting to see who comes out the victor in this intriguing World Series.
