SEC Football: A Week of Upsets

Week 8 of college football marked a weekend of upsets in the SEC. On Saturday, October 19, 2013, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Georgia all suffered unexpected losses on the field.

The biggest upset of the day may have been when #24 ranked Auburn beat #7 Texas A&M with a score of 45-41 right in the Aggie’s own Kyle Field. Texas A&M started out the game strong, and fellow Aggies felt confident that they would bring home yet another win for the team. However, Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel suffered a shoulder injury and tried to play through it, but came up short in the last quarter of the game when Auburn pushed through and gained four touchdowns to win the game.

The next upset was when Tennessee, which had lost nineteen straight games to ranked opponents, managed to edge out #11 South Carolina 23-21.The vols’ nineteen-yard field goal by Michael Palardy made in the fourth quarter with only seconds left to spare gave Tennessee their first SEC win as they beat the gamecocks.

Another game to add to the list was Vanderbilt vs. Georgia. #15 Georgia led the game all the way to the fourth quarter, and then Vanderbilt scored the final seventeen points to win 31-27. This marked the second week in a row that Georgia had entered as the favorite and lost.

These games just go to show that anything can happen on any given day. It will be interesting to see if these teams will be able to turn it around for week 9.
