The Future is Here

The shopping site to get almost anything you want, amazon.com, has launched a new way for people to get their goods delivered to their doors. For months the company has been hinting that they were working on something new. They kept saying, “whatever you think it is, it isn’t”. This past Sunday, Amazon announced on “60 minutes” what their new project is.

Instead of waiting the full week for regular shipping and handling, packages will be delivered directly to your doorstep by air in 30 minutes or less in drones called, “Octocopers”.

This type of delivery system, called “Prime Air” by Amazon still requires more testing, but the delivery service will be available to the public in about 4-5 years. So far the drones can only fly about 10 miles and only carry packages that are under 5 pounds. Which is beneficial to amazon because about 86% of their products are under 5 pounds. Another benefit to this system is that it is very green. There is a need for less trucks on the road which will reduce the amount of pollution that cars contribute to the environment.

A few complications to the drones is that they may intervene with airplanes and their flight paths, also it may decrease the amount of jobs out there for truck drivers and delivery men and women.

The way the drones will pick up packages in small yellow buckets at Amazon’s warehouses and then they will fly through the air at incredulous speeds to deliver the packages to the individual as soon as the hit the yellow “buy” button.

All of this sounds like it is coming out of a futuristic science fiction movie, but apparently seeing flying drones delivering mail will be as normal as seeing the mail truck everyday. Any rule changes that need to be made to the “Octocopers” will be made by 2015.
