Another Tragic Day at Fort Hood

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2014, was a sad day for America. An Iraq War veteran, who was being treated for a mental illness, killed 3 fellow servicemen and injured 16 after open fire at the home of America’s Armored Corps in Fort Hood, Texas.

The lonestar state, unfortunately, has fell victim to many shootings in the past couple decades. In 2009, a mere 5 years ago, the same base was attacked, with over twelve people killed. A total of thirteen were killed after the deadly shooting, as well as thirty plus wounded during this attack. This event is seen as the most violent and horrific offense on an American military base to date.

The gunman, named Ivan Lopez, served in Iraq in 2011. For four months, Lopez was lucky enough to avoid damage to his body, with no wounds when he returned home. That being said, Lopez complained about suffering a “traumatic brain injury” once he returned home, said senior officer of the Army base Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley. The gunman sought attention for his problems regarding anxiety and depression before the shooting occurred. He was also taking tests to find out whether or not he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as well. Lopez, a married man, had arrived from another Texas base in February of this year. Milley also reported that the gunman was taking medication before the event occurred.

On the day of the shooting, Lopez supposedly entered the building and began shooting a “.45-caliber semi-automatic pistol”, says People. Before entering another building, Lopez entered a vehicle and continued firing. Lopez was then stopped by the police in the parking lot, coming within 20 feet of an officer. After the officer drew her weapon, the gunman committed suicide, reports commander Milley. Including Lopez, a total of 4 were killed in this tragic event.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of victims, service members, and any others who witnessed this horrifying occurrence.
