It capsized on the  16th of April, 2014.  According to reports, the ferry was on a trip from Incheon to the island of Jeju when the ship suddenly began to list, and then it quickly capsized in the Yellow Sea, going down with 476 people onboard.

While the ferry was sinking, a group of 48 little girls put on their life vest and were hastily shoved into a room, one that was meant for 30. None of them survived.

To this day, 117 of the 476 people, are still missing. 300 of the people that were on the ferry had been high school students from a school in Ansan, near South Korea’s capital, Seoul. 174 were rescued when the ferry first capsized, and  so far rescuers have found 184 bodies near the site of the wreck, and 117 still remain to be found, dead or alive.

When divers arrived at the scene of the wreck, they found doors forced shut by the water pressure, a forest of items floating above it on the surface of the Yellow Sea,  and great currents that tugged at their breathing tubes while they searched for the dead.

As for what caused the sinking of the ferry, the reasons are still unknown. an investigation is being carried out by prosecutors in South Korea to determine exactly what occurred, and specifically why the ferry sank.

While the investigation continues, It was reported that angry relatives of the missing passengers on the ferry confronted their gov’t and police. Angry parents accused their government of feeding them lies and delaying the investigation. Almost all of them demanded an update to the investigation, which included news of the safety of their loved ones.

The investigation is still ongoing, so the source of the disaster shall be uncovered soon, with the rest of the passengers hopefully found or rescued.
