Troubling Tragedy in Korea Gains National Attention

Carrying over 476 passengers, a South Korean Ferry ship sank on April 16th, 2014 and has claimed the lives of more than 200 passengers.

Even with the devastating number of confirmed deaths, unfortunately, the death toll continues to rise as diving teams work relentlessly to recover the remains of the still missing passengers.

Many students found this topic especially difficult due to the heartfelt content yet Senior, Josh Kaplan, offered some suppressive insight,

“It’s a very sad event, I must say. Many of those kids were still in Middle School and High School, they didn’t even have a chance and that’s what I can’t necessarily get a grip on” says Kaplan.

Indeed within this troubling situation, It is necessary to question why this happened and mostly specifically how?  Police are questioning the boat’s captain, and maritime police are investigating safety and rescue conditions aboard the ferry although when questioned by press, the boat captain apologized and then revealed that he has nothing to record for comment.

After reports formed that passengers were told to remain on the ship by the captain, many find endangerment in this command.

“The warning over the ferry’s loudspeakers may have put passengers’ lives at risk,” says an unnamed personal aboard the ship.

When asked, many form the same opinion of this woman for its clear that this command may have been the difference between life and death within this specific situation.

“I think the instruction for those people to remain in place and not get on lifeboats was terribly, tragically wrong,” she said.

A collaboration of surrounding nations has offered their assistance in terms of search and rescue yet the support offered will only lead to more recoveries of lost souls. With families still questioning whether or not their loved one is alive, as the days go on, the missing only seem to clot to one significantly difficult conclusion.

Finding a strong form of anguish within this incident, all nations alike, no matter how far, seem to share the same sense of darkness during this disconcerting time.
