Heavy Flooding in South and Northeast United States

On Wednesday, April 20th, the Northeast and Southern regions of the United States were visited by a chaotic storm.  It was a slow moving storm systems that brought heavy rain to the Northeast, deadly tornados in the Great Plains region and the Deep South,  and flooding from the Gulf Coast of the US to the Northeast.

From the weather reports given, the heaviest rains appeared over the Northeast part of the US.  Although the storm has passed, warnings still exist in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania,  and Rhode Island for residents to watch for continued minor flooding.

Amongst the mayhem brought by the slow moving storm,  the rain that fell in NYC covered roads in the region and delayed train service in the city. the cost for the damage from the flooding was tremendous.  for example, in Pensacola, Florida, the damage was worth $100 million dollars in the city alone.

Roads, such as those in Walton County, Florida, turned into waterfalls,  as shown, while  cars sat abandoned as they were swept under, some half submerged, and buildings were damaged by the floodwaters.  Pensacola, from reports, had not been prepared for this kind of flooding. The city had been prepared for hurricanes, but not this.

From the information gather, an estimated 2. 47 inches of rain fell over 2 days. an estimated 15.55 inches of rain fell on Pensacola’s airport, submerging it.  This has been, by far, the most rain that has fallen on a single calendar day.  On Orange Beach, Alabama, 22-26 inches of rain fell on the Beach in less than 24 hours. According to CNN, the waters were so high that people had to get onto floating furniture and rooftops,  in order to survive, and wait to be rescued.

When the raining finally stopped, and the damage accessed, the Florida Governor declared a state of emergency, giving him the right to hand out supplies for the those who lost their homes. Those people in Florida, those who had their houses and streets flooded, lost everything. The victims had no flood insurance because didn’t think they were in a flood area. It seems now that, regretfully, they were proven wrong.

In time, hopefully, the situation will improve, as a state of emergency was called over Florida, and supplies are being handed out to the victims of the flooding, and in time the floodwaters will recede.  Florida will heal, as New Jersey has after Superstorm Sandy, and Louisiana from Hurricane Irene.
