WMC Football Secures Sectional Title
A rainy Friday night couldn’t stop the Wolfpack faithful from coming out to watch them take on West Essex for the sectional title. The Pack had seen West Essex already that season where they won 9-7 off a late field goal scored by Johnny Viera. The two teams faced off in last year’s sectional final. The Wolfpack came out on top then and now. West Morris beat West Essex 21-7 to win another Sectional title. This is the first time in school history that the football program has won back to back sectional championships.
Coming into the playoffs the Wolfpack was awarded the one seed. They had achieved an undefeated regular season with a conference title. Their playoff journey was full of domination. In the first round they took down Hacketstown 42-7. The semifinal round, Warren Hills, whom they also beat in a powerful fashion 49-15. This win earned them their spot in the state sectional final.
West Morris struck first with Stefano Montella running 26 yards in for the touchdown. West Essex tied it up in the second quarter. The fourth quarter was all Wolfpack. Stefano Montella ran another in to put his team ahead 14-7. Vinnie Desiderio went on a 43 yard run to the house, sealing the deal for the Wolfpack win. Stefano Montella recorded 245 rushing yards on the night to bring his season total up to 2,295.
Senior captain Collin Leonhardt stated “It means so much to myself and all the other guys. We work so hard and the coaches work so hard so to see it all come together is a great experience. This is the 1st time in school history we’ve gone back to back so it was cool to make some history as well.” He continued, “The win means a lot but we are excited to get after it and try and win the first ever group championship. The NJSIAA expanded the playoffs this year so we wouldn’t only bring home our schools first Group championship but the first ever.”
The Wolfpack have made their way back to the group semifinals. This game will be played on November 20 against Old Tappan at 11 am.
