Sophomore Tommy Borgia is a wrestler and a football player at West Morris Central and has competed at the varsity level in both sports for the entirety of his high school career thus far. Due to his outstanding achievements in wrestling this 2023-2024 season, Tommy has been nominated for Central’s Athlete of the Month.
Borgia has been wrestling since he was three years old, which means he has had a love for the sport for a total of 13 years. During his time at Central, he has had many memorable experiences in both wrestling and football. His highest achievement that he has received so far is winning the Region Three championship at West Orange his freshman year. Similarly, his favorite memory in the Wrestling program at WMC was winning the sectional finals last year (his freshman year).
The best advice that Borgia has ever received from a coach is, “Don’t wrestle the name, or the record or the guy, you have to compete with everyone. Once you get in your head…you will start getting nervous.” This advice from his coach he says helps him get through his matches and is great to wrestle by.
Borgia’s favorite team tradition is not for wrestling but instead football. He loves the “Thursday afternoon donut meetings after practice.” He also says that the traditions for wrestling and football vary greatly, but this is his overall favorite tradition as an athlete at Central.
Advice that Borgia would give his younger self is to stay focused, and to not let things outside of what you can control affect you. Additionally, he would advise anyone to “Always stay focused on your goals.”
Since he is a sophomore, his college career is still in the distant future yet he already is considering some options to continue his athletic career. Specifically he says, “I’ll probably end up playing football, but I can definitely see myself wrestling at some point.”
