The postseason, also known as the “playoffs,” can be very confusing to non-baseball watchers. There are two leagues within the MLB, the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). Per each league, there are six postseason spots (12 in all of MLB) and the two highest seeding teams get byes in the first round. The top two seeds for the AL for the 2024 season are the New York Yankees at number 1 (94-68) and the Cleveland Guardians at number 2 (92-69). The top two seeds for the NL are the Los Angeles Dodgers at number 1 (98-64) and the Philadelphia Phillies at number 2 (95-67). The third and sixth seeds play each other and the fourth and fifth seeds play each other in a Wild Card Round. In this round, these seeds play best out of three games and the winner will play one of the bye teams. For the AL, the third-seeded Houston Astros (88-73) will take on the sixth-seeded Detroit Tigers (86-76), and the fourth-seeded Baltimore Orioles (91-71) will take on the fifth-seeded Kansas City Royals (86-76). For the NL, the third-seeded Milwaukee Brewers (93-69) will take on the sixth-seeded New York Mets (89-73) and the fourth-seeded San Diego Padres (93-69) will take on the fifth-seeded Atlanta Braves (89-73). The winner of the fourth and fifth-seeded teams will play the number 1 seed and the winner of the third and sixth seeded will play the number 2 seed.
After the Wild Card Round, there is the American and National League Division Series (ALDS/NLDS) where the winners of the Wild Card Round play. After the ALDS/NLDS, there is the American and National League Champion Series where the top two teams from each division play eachother with the ultimate winner going to the World Series.
