On Friday, September 27th, Stevie Nicks released the pro choice anthem, “The Lighthouse” as a response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. “I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘What can we, as a collective force, do about this?’ For me, it was to write a song” Nicks said in an Instagram post the night the song was released. The Rock and Roll star continued, “I have often said to myself, this might be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men that love them. This is an anthem.”
Nicks sends a message through the song, telling people that although the government might take your power, they should not back down and to fight for their rights they want to protect, and many fought so hard to achieve over five decades ago. In the song, Nicks sings, “They’ll take your soul, they’ll take your power/ Unless you stand up and take it back/ Try to see the future and get mad/ It’s slipping through your fingers, you don’t have what you had /You don’t have much time to get it back.”
Through her words, Stevie Nicks expresses great fear for what is to come in the future if people don’t fight for their rights. She urges people to take a stand through more lyrics from “The Lighthouse”. “You gotta get in the game/ You gotta learn how to play/ You gotta make a change/ You gotta do it today.”
This song comes as the presidential election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is just over one month away. Nicks releasing this song so soon before the election shows how she is trying to push people to vote in this upcoming election for what they believe is right and what they want to protect. As Nicks states in a different Instagram post from September 11th urging people to go out and vote this November, “…now is the time to research and choose the candidate that speaks to your beliefs”.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is set to perform on SNL on October 12th, alongside Ariana Grande who is hosting.
