Booktok is a hashtag-driven community on TikTok where users share short videos discussing books, authors, and reading-related topics. The platform has given rise to a new generation of book lovers, who share their passion for reading through creative and engaging content. BookTok has become a go-to destination for readers seeking inspiration and connection, from book reviews and recommendations to author takeovers and reading challenges.
Sara Kozlowskki, a junior at WMC, especially loves looking at the renowned hashtag. She discusses her engagement with BookTok, a platform she says she’s “on quite often.” She mentions purchasing books recommended on BookTok, including the Boys of Tommen series and “1000 Boy Kisses,” though she found the latter disappointing to read. Kozlowski notes that while BookTok has a broad range of genres, romance, particularly fantasy romance, is prevalent. She acknowledges that BookTok can limit the selection of books readers are exposed to, but also credits it for shaping the book community by making certain books popular. She concludes that booktok “definitely shapes the book community in a large sense.”
She’s not the only person who follows the hashtag, Abby Latona, also a Junior, and an avid Booktok enthusiast, shares her passion for ‘The Lunar Chronicles’ by Marissa Meyer, a dystopian series that has captivated her with its exceptional character development and futuristic twists on classic fairy tales. While she enjoys discovering new reads on Booktok, her preferences remain rooted in the dystopian genre, where she finds solace in the thrilling worlds and strong protagonists. Interestingly, she’s not a fan of popular romance books on the platform. However, ‘Love and Gelato’ is a notable exception that did win her over. When questioned if Booktok created a genre for itself she says “Definitely… because there are many books that are heavily associated with that, and that was made popular by the hashtag Booktok.” Despite Booktok’s influence, Abby states that Booktok “gave me a lot of ideas of what to read, but for the most part, I pretty much stick to what I like.” She appreciates the platform’s recommendations, but her love for dystopian and science fiction remains unwavering, and she’s always on the lookout for more books that will transport her to new and exciting worlds.
They’re not alone in their passion for BookTok, as evidenced by the dedicated tables at Barnes & Noble featuring a curated selection of books labeled “#BookTok Made Me Read It.” This prominent display showcases the significant influence of the BookTok community on reading trends and book sales. Many bookstores now have sections devoted to BookTok recommendations, further solidifying the platform’s impact on the literary world. The tables are often filled with diverse titles, from contemporary fiction to fantasy and romance, all of which have been discovered and championed by the BookTok community. As a result, BookTok has become a driving force in the publishing industry, with many authors and publishers actively seeking to lock into its vast and engaged audience. The phenomenon has also created increased visibility for indie authors and smaller publishing houses and created new opportunities for writers to connect with readers.
Moreover, BookTok has played a pivotal role in enhancing the literary world, shattering traditional barriers, and amplifying marginalized voices. By providing a vibrant platform for diverse perspectives and experiences, the community has championed books and authors from underrepresented groups. This includes people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and authors with disabilities. This has not only led to increased visibility and recognition for these voices but has also launched the careers of debut authors who may have otherwise been overlooked. Through its innovative and inclusive approach, BookTok has revolutionized the way we interact with reading and book culture, making it more dynamic, accessible, and enjoyable for a broader audience. By celebrating the diversity of stories and experiences, BookTok has created a sense of belonging and connection among readers, fostering a community that is passionate, supportive, and eager to discover new voices and perspectives.
