West Morris Central has something for everyone. Whether a student likes sports, performing, or being creative, WMC has an activity that fits. One student in particular has a passion for everything. That student is Ella Vancoevering.
Vancoevering is a senior here and is currently doing an immense amount of activities. Her artistic activities include, WMC Theater and marching band. Along with those she is also one of the co-leaders for WMC’s SSAA (soprano 1, soprano 2, alto 1, alto 2) a cappella group The Loreleis, the TTBB (tenor 1, tenor 2, bass 1, bass 2) group Noteworthies, both the Treble and Mixed select choirs, and she also does photography on the side. Outside of the arts she is a cheerleader, goes to Vo-tech for cosmetology, and is a team member for the Antioch retreats.
Vancoevering has been singing and acting for seven years and decided to join the Marching band this year. According to Vancoevering, “I played trumpet in middle school, and I remember enjoying it, but the [marching band and cheer] seasons didn’t really align when I got to high school, so I decided to choose cheer over marching band. However, this year, our two drum majors were the only trumpet players in the band and at competitions they needed more trumpet sound. So I was like, I’ll come and help you guys out.”
With being involved in as much as she is, Vancoevering has to find ways to manage it all while still being on top of her schoolwork. She states “A lot of it is just time management, making sure they don’t overlap too much. But I think even bigger than time management is communication with your coaches and your directors and that sort of thing, because they also need to know your schedule and understand how it works.” Along with time management, her biggest motivator when performing is the drive to do her best. She states, “ it’s a performance at the end of the day. So if you don’t put in the effort to do your best, then you’re not going to look your best. You’re not gonna feel your best.” Another drive for her is her love of performing because that is when she is happiest.
When she graduates, Vancoevering would love to keep some of these things in her life forever. She plans on “going into education in college with a minor in theater” and plans on auditioning and performing in college as well. Ella Vancoevering is proof that a person can do anything they put their mind to.
