A local Long Valley man, Kevin Speicher is now the owner and operator of the gym formally known as “ZS Fitness”. Speicher has been working hard to improve the facility and make it his own. The club is now called Old Skool Iron. Spicier is passionate about athletics which will help drive the gym into success benefiting all club members. Speicher has 26 years of experience in athletic and personal training as well as sports nutrition. He specializes in biomechanics and exercise physiology. He also possesses a dual masters in P.T. Speicher also owns Old Skool Iron training which currently operates in nine countries, training athletes from the middle school level all the way up to collegiate and professional/Olympic level.
Training and athletics has always been a part of Speichers life. “Athletics were an environment I felt I could be myself the most.” Speicher says. He is passionate about training others and he wishes to pass on the love he has for athletics and training to others. “Training has taught me things like how to overcome defeat and stay disciplined” Speicher explains.
Speicher’s true passion is passing on the skills and knowledge he has learned to the youth. He has coached youth sports and trained many youth athletes, building not only their skills and knowledge but their self esteem. As gym goers walk into his gym on any given day they will see youth are welcomed by Speicher with a fist bump and encouraging words. He is always offering the youth his knowledge and anything that might help them with their technique during a lift.
George Wisnewski, a junior at West Morris Central says “The owner of the gym is very nice and will help you with whatever you need.”
Speichers strives to create a great lifting environment and continues to improve the facility on a daily basis. The facility is now rebranded with Old Skool iron flags and emblems proudly displayed throughout the facility. Just in the first couple of days Speicher brought in new cable machine attachments, barbell collars and foam rollers. Additionally as a part of the gym revamp, Speicher is swapping out old equipment and adding more that can be utilized by all lifters.
He has taken machines that were in bad condition off the floor, and he plans to replace these machines with new equipment. Speicher says “I have some great pieces coming in to replace the old equipment including a hack squat, single arm row, abductor and adductor machines as well as new cardio machines.” This will offer a greater variety and functionality in the gym. Speicher has already changed the layout of the gym with the existing equipment. Wisnewski says “The new layout allows for a more open environment.”
Speicher has also had all the existing machines serviced. The current machines are top of the line Hammer strength/ life fitness brand machines. The cables have been adjusted, the machines have been lubricated and the belts have been tensioned on all machines in the facility. Speicher has also painted, replaced light fixtures and added new furniture. Moreover, he has improved the environment by making it noticeably cleaner and more organized. Wisnewski says “In general the environment is much cleaner and more people have been going.” Speicher has removed the traditional disinfectant spray and rag system as seen in most gyms and instead opted to go with disposable disinfecting wipes. Although this may cost Speicher in the short term, it will keep the gym sanitary and fresh in the long run and conveniently allow lifters to clean their equipment after each use. Speicher has also introduced many new supplements and drinks for lifters to enjoy. He is versed in any supplement or drink he is carrying and can inform you of all the benefits and which one might be advantageous to take and when. New products include BCAAs like X-tend and energy drinks like c4 Energy, Gorilla Mind, Ryse fuel along with protein including Core Power and Gold Standard protein powder and many more supplements to improve overall health!
Speichers next project in the gym is to expand the outdoor lifting area. He has already cleaned up much of the debris and old equipment outside. He has also rearranged the floor mats. Wisnewski says “There is currently a lack of equipment outside but on warm days doing workouts outdoors would be nice if more equipment was added.” Speicher plans on adding new fresh outdoor equipment like dip bars, boxes and some weights. Speicher will hold outdoor bootcamp classes eventually. Speicher says “Our goal is to provide equipment to benefit individuals at every level.”
The gym is open from 5-11 daily. Speicher is always there and ready to show potential club members around the club and answer any questions they may have. If you are interested in seeing the gym in person you can go to the gym or reach out to Kevin Speicher with any questions.
