Senior Lucas Rowland has been recognized as November’s Athlete of the Month. This honor is a testament to his dedication and achievements in cross-country running. Rowland started running in middle school with a passion that grew stronger despite the interruption caused by COVID. Rowland ran in middle school, starting in sixth grade. However, he really began to embrace the sport during his freshman year. In addition to cross-country, he also competes in winter track and spring track, showcasing his versatility and commitment to running.
Balancing academics and athletics can be challenging, yet Rowland manages to excel in both areas. Outside of his competitive seasons, he runs on his own but takes a break during the musical, where he plays a role as an ensemble member. “I usually just have a small role, but they say there’s no such thing as small roles, only small actors,” he explained.
This past season, Rowland made significant strides alongside his team as they made it to groups this fall. He acknowledged the competition they faced, particularly from Hackettstown, who were right behind them in the state rankings. “We were able to beat them in order to go to groups,” Rowland stated proudly.
A key aspect of Rowland’s success is his mindset, heavily influenced by his coaches. “The best advice I’ve ever received from a coach is just to live in the moment,” Rowland recalled. This philosophy helps him manage pre-race nerves and the pressure from following in the footsteps of his brother, a competitive sprinter. His brother and those around him inspire him to compete and perform at a high level. “I want younger runners to look up to me to see me as someone they want to be,” he explained.
Rowland admires his brother and Coach Johnson, who has guided him throughout his running career. “He had a very good career in college, and knowing that he’s there supporting me all the way through my career is very important to me,” Rowland said.
While Rowland appreciates the individuality of cross-country, he also recognizes the challenges it brings. “You have to know, ‘okay, that was all me,’ whether it be a loss or a win. And that can be quite challenging,” he shared. He also offered advice for his freshman self, encouraging perseverance in both academics and athletics. “Stay on it and focus on enjoying the moments you’re in,” he suggested.
Looking ahead, Rowland is contemplating his future after high school. While he has not decided to run in college, he remains open to exploring new opportunities. “I want to see what else there is, try something new other than running,” he said.
Rowland further explains his thoughts on attending a good college by reflecting on his mother’s past: “I used to want to go to University of California Berkeley because that’s where my mother went.” However, he says he does not think he will end up attending there, despite it being a beautiful school. “I’m seeing whatever school fits my needs for what I want to do.” Rowland is contemplating his future career and sees a possible path in psychiatry.
Rowland’s recognition as Athlete of the Month is not just about his accomplishments on the track but also about his growth as a person and athlete. Congratulations to Lucas Rowland and best of luck to him in his future!
