Macy Sabo has been named November’s Athlete of the Month, a recognition that highlights her dedication and achievements in field hockey this fall season. Her journey began during quarantine in seventh grade when she picked up the sport for fun. However, she did not officially compete until her freshman year of high school. Now, as the captain, she leads the team with determination and spirit.
A significant part of Sabo’s success this season has been her focus on building strong relationships within her team. “We wanted to have the best group we could,” she explained. This unique dynamic allows seniors and freshmen to come together as one. “There was no difference between varsity, JV or freshman when we’re on a field together,” Sabo says. “We’re all just like one big team.” This sense of unity has created an environment where every player feels valued, and Sabo made it a point to ensure that no one felt less important.
Throughout the season, Sabo and her team faced tough rivals, particularly Chatham and Mendham. “We wanted to beat them so badly,” she recalled, referring to previous years when they struggled against them. This season, the team celebrated victories over Chatham, showcasing their growth and resilience. “We did beat both of them, but we did tie Mendham one time,” she noted
The semifinal round was the Pack’s biggest challenge as they faced state-ranked Rumson-Fair Haven. Macy Sabo scored the overtime goal, assisted by Lexi Buchanan after a penalty corner. “I knew I had to control the ball,” Sabo told The Paw. Once she gained possession, she noted, “I saw an opening once the goalie popped point and I slammed it in the back of the goal.” Coach Buchanan emphasized the team’s speed and the importance of neutralizing Rumson’s senior forward, Izzy Kaczor, who had 32 goals and 19 assists. The Pack advanced to the state finals but lost 3-0 to nationally ranked West Essex.
As she approaches the end of her high school career, Sabo reflects on her experiences. When asked what she would advise her younger self, Sabo encourages younger athletes not to give up or quit teams they love. “Being part of a team makes everything easier and better,” Sabo said. Although she will not continue playing field hockey in college, she is open to club opportunities, depending on the school she attends. Congratulations on this accomplishment to Macy Sabo, and best of luck for her in the future!
