Released on Christmas Day, 2024, Nosferatu, Directed by Robert Eggers, is a critically acclaimed success. The original Nosferatu was released in 1922 after it took the exact idea for the plot from the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.
One hundred and two years after the release of Nosferatu (1922),Robert Eggers re-made Nosferatu. Eggers, who also has had major successes with his films, The Northmen (2022), The Lighthouse (2019), and The Witch (2015), has come to release yet another cinematic masterpiece. Eggers wanted to showcase the “horrific bond between vampiric Count Orlok and tormented Ellen Hutter…” according to rogerebert.com. The cast stars Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Williem Dafoe, and more.
The story of Nosferatu follows Count Orlok, who stalks and preys on the wife of an estate agent who goes to Count Orlok’s Castle when Count Orlok wants to buy a home near the estate agent and his wife. Many similarities from the novel and the 1922 movie are clearly seen and the way the story is told along with characters in the movie show how the writers of the film used the novel in order to make the film without labeling it “Dracula”. Nosferatu is one of the best selling horror movies of 2024. The movie has seen $101 million in ticket sales worldwide since its release. The movie cost $50 million to make, and the revenue brought in has made the creators back $51 million so far.
With its beautiful cinematography, as well as stunning wardrobe and hand made sets, the movie encapsulates the gloomy and horrifying mood and tone. Rotten Tomatoes has been saying that the “devilishly seductive” movie is a “horror masterpiece”, and I could not agree more. The way the movie accurately depicts a German town in the 1800’s as well as Count Orlok’s castle shows the true work that went into being able to showcase the most authenticity possible. Each set was built to clearly show the way towns were built during the mid 19th century in Germany. The cobblestone streets in the movie were the exact way streets were made during that time in Germany.
Although some critics have said that the movie had too much dialogue and inconsistent tone, it is clear that the movie has been able to reach its intended audience, fans of both the book, Dracula, and the Nosferatu movie, as well as horror fans around the globe.
In my opinion, Nosferatu is one of the best films of 2024, being able to gain outstanding numbers in the box office as well as captivate the hearts of many fans. Robert Eggers is truly one of the best directors of our generation.
