West Morris Central celebrated their fourth annual Female Athlete Recognition Night on February 11th. This night honors all the hard working female athletes at WMC. Female athletes often go unnoticed so this event is an amazing opportunity to spotlight females in sports in hopes to boost participation of young girls.
This event occurred during half time of the girls varsity basketball game against Randolph. All female athletes were invited to come to be celebrated.
Each sport was announced along with the captains of the team. This includes cheerleading, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, tennis, swimming, basketball, fencing, winter track, spring track, lacrosse, softball, and all Unified sports. After each individual sport took a picture, everybody gathered together for one big group picture.
To finish off the ceremony, the female athlete of the year award was presented to Lauren Carbon. Carbon plays field hockey and lacrosse and is a captain for both teams.
.“This is such an important role because I can inspire young girls to pursue their love in sports.” Carbon says. She has put in hard work and dedication to be able to achieve this award. “I feel honored and so grateful for those who have helped me along the way and pushed me including my teammates, coaches and family. I wouldn’t have done it without them” Carbon said.
Events like this are especially important to draw young girls to sports. Being involved in sports empowers girls by boosting their self confidence, promoting teamwork, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. That is why this night is so important to have at WMC.
