Growing Protests and the Chances of Violence after 2016 Election
After the election, protests against President-elect Donald J. Trump immediately erupted in major cities like New York City, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles. However, these once peaceful protests seem to be evolving as passion grows. Will there be violence in the upcoming days?
Although their main message is “Love Trumps Hate”, protesters have been taking a more aggressive approach and have people questioning whether or not these demonstrations will maintain their peaceful stance.
Made clear throughout the race, this election is not just like any other. No matter who won, the 2016 presidential election is a historical event. However, it may be historical for bad reasons. Trump’s questionable tactics and choice of words have angered people beyond republican and democratic parties, and instead, have people fighting for human rights, including protests against racism, homophobia and islamophobia.
Because this election has dealt with not just politics, but the race, religion, and sex of American citizens, I believe these protests will very quickly become violent and dangerous. Trump’s insulting comments towards so many people of different ethnicities and backgrounds have earned him an abundance of enemies, all who are passionate to remove him from office.
Unfortunately, this election has seemed to bring out the worst in Americans from around the country. In addition, just because the race is over, does not mean the dislike towards the winner has ceased. As long as people take offense to Trump’s comments, as well as draw barriers between fellow Americans, the next few weeks will be a tumultuous ride. If he can generate this reaction in less than a week, who knows what Trump will spark in the next four years.
Thousands gather by Capitol Hill to protest the election of Donald J. Trump.
