Student Athlete Spotlight – Brandon Chen
Our cross country team saw a lot of success this season and that can be attributed to Senior Brandon Chen. Chen began running XC when he was freshman in high school because “I went to one soccer summer practice and realized I wasn’t good enough so I quit and started cross country.”
Over his four years, Chen’s best year stats wise was this season. Chen got second in the Morris County Championship Race with a time of 16:02.23. In the North 2 Group 3 race Chen brought back a championship to WMC after finishing with a time of 15:42.13. He was then invited to the NJSIAA Meet of Champions where he placed 11th out of 180. But Chen did not just achieve success this year but at the very start of his career too: “My sophomore year I went in my first varsity race and I performed third best on the team and PR’d by like 2 minutes and 30 seconds…”
Chen’s great performances have allowed him to hold multiple school records in the 2.1 mile, 2 mile and 5000m.
His favorite part about being on WMC’s cross country team is “the team aspect of it and all the guys who are on the team. They make it a lot of fun.”
Not only does Chen excel on the cross country course but on the track as well. He currently holds the school record for the 5K on the track team.
Congratulations to Brandon Chen for being selected as The Paw’s Student Athlete Spotlight for November.
