West Morris celebrates with their Group 2 Sectional title.

On Saturday, February 19th, the boys winter track team traveled down to Bennett Athletic Complex in Toms River to compete for the Group 2 title at the NJSIAA Groups 2 and 3 sectional championships. The event showcased top athletes from Group 2 and 3 schools from all around New Jersey.

With the team’s combined effort, West Morris toppled Voorhees High School in a nail-biting 56-51 finish.

Notable standouts from West Morris include a pair of double-winners in seniors Andrew Rowland and Brandon Chen. Rowland set a school record in the 55-meter dash running a 6.71 in addition to the 52.78 400-meter dash he ran earlier in the meet. Chen provided a massive spark for the distance squad as he won both the 1600 (4:31.99) and the 3200 (9:28.33). The two combined for a total of 40 out of West Morris’ 56 total points. The remaining 16 points were picked up by freshman Cade Zeolla placing second in the pole vault (12-0) and senior Sean Davies finishing second in the high jump (5-10). All four of the athletes would later advance forward to the NJSIAA Group championships.

The season is far from over however, as Chen, Davies, and Zeolla picked up impressive marks at the group championships that qualified them to compete in the New Jersey Meet of Champions. Chen and Zeolla qualified in wild-card positions while Davies took 3rd in the high jump (6-0) tying the school record. The boys will try and prolong their season success at the Meet of Champions, March 4th through 5th.
