MLB Cy Young Award
With the MLB season coming to an end and the playoff race heating up this also means that the Cy Young Award race is closing out. Each season the Cy Young award is given to the best pitchers in baseball, one from the National League and one from the American League. The National League race is coming down the wire this year, but the American League, however, is an easier decision.
Yu Darvish, Chicago Cubs’ right-hander and Cincinnati Reds’ Trevor Bauer have the best chance to overthrow defending back-to-back winner Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets, but don’t count deGrom out just yet.
Jacob deGrom has an ERA (Earned Run Average in 9 innings) of 2.14 this season. He is right on the heels of Trevor Bauer with 93 strikeouts. deGrom has a 0.92 WHIP (Walks and Hits per Inning). deGrom has won the Cy Young the last 2 seasons. Will his stats and performance get him his third consecutive win?
Trevor Bauer leads the National League with an ERA of 1.73. His 100 strikeouts have put him at the top of the NL. His WHIP for the 2020 season is 0.79, second in the league. His performance in his last start against Milwaukee may have just given him an edge.
Yu Darvish right now is tied for the league lead with 7 wins. He has an ERA of 2.22 and a WHIP of 1.00. Darvish has thrown 88 strikeouts this season. He has been a dominant pitcher for the Cubs and according to ESPN he is the favorite to win the 2020 NL Cy Young award, but his stats don’t look as good as deGrom or Bauer.
The last few starts of the season will be the deciding factor of the 2020 National League Cy Young Award winner.
In the American League (AL) there is an obvious choice:Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians. Beiber leads the MLB with 8 wins, a 1.63 ERA and 122 strikeouts. He has dominated the AL this season. Texas Rangers’ Lance Lyn is second in the AL for the award. Lyn has an ERA of 2.53, 84 strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.96. Third in the race is Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox. He has 97 strikeouts on the season which is second in the league, and he has an ERA of 3.5. What gives Giolito a good case is his 13 strikeout no hitter against the Padres this season.
My predictions for the NL and AL winners are Trevor Bauer and Shane Bieber, respectively. Bauer’s stats speak for themself, he leads the NL in almost all categories and his play is completely dominant. While deGrom has played well he has not been nearly as dominant as years past, and Darvish’s performance has been great this season but his stats are not as good as Bauer. Bieber is the obvious choice in the AL. There is no other pitcher that comes close to his stats and his performances this season.
