An 18 month old baby and 25 year old mother were found stuck in an icy river in Utah. Reports say that the two were trapped in their car in the river for 14 hours.

Police said the vehicle was a four door Dodge passenger car.  It was found upside down and on its side by a fisherman at 12:24 p.m.  The mother, later identified as Jennifer or “Jenny” Groesbeck, and her child Lily were found inside the car.

As reported by the Spanish Fork Public Safety on March 7th, “It is believed the vehicle struck the cement barrier on the south end of the bridge and traveled into the river. It is unknown why the vehicle left the roadway.”

The report also mentioned that Jenny was not alive when they were found. Lily, however, was alive, but in critical condition.

When the vehicle crashed into the river, the back of the car was propped up slightly higher than the front of the car, said Lt. Matt Johnson to KSL News. According to Johnson, water running through the vehicle “was merely inches” from Lily’s head when she was rescued by Spanish Fork police officers and firefighters.

“Lily’s father was working out of state at the time of the wreck and traveled back to Utah to see his daughter, when he received news of the wreck,” Johnson said. “The Lieutenant was unsure whether the man also lives outside of Utah, but said he was not married to Groesbeck.”

The New York Daily News said, “The baby was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City and is listed in critical condition.”

A fundraiser was started by Jenny’s close friend on gofundme.com, a popular website that people use to raise money.

A post on the fundraiser stated that “these funds will be used to fund funeral services for Jenny including all funeral expenses, casket, headstone, etc. The funds will be distributed to Jill Sanderson [Jenny’s sister] for these expenses and also any expenses related to Lily’s care including any current hospital bills, future medical care, etc. as she will require medical care throughout her life.”

The fundraiser was a huge success, raising over $60,000 in two days. This exceeded the initial goal of $6,000.  About 2,000 people have donated to Lily and her family.
