The Heisman trophy is the most coveted award in college football, honoring the most outstanding player. The award was first given out in 1935 to University of Chicago Running Back Jay Berwanger. Some past Heisman winners are Joe Burrow (2019), Baker Mayfield (2017), Tim Tebow (2007) and Doug Flutie (1984). The finalists for the 2020 Heisman trophy have been announced by ESPN: Trevor Lawrence, quarterback Clemson; Kyle Trask, quarterback Florida; Mac Jones, quarterback Alabama; and Devonta Smith, wide receiver Alabama.
Trevor Lawernce is a three year starter at Clemson University, as a starter he has a 34-2 record. He has led the tigers to three ACC titles, two national championship appearances and one national championship win. At the time of voting Lawrence had a completion percentage of 69.2%, 2753 passing yards, an average of 9.6 yards per pass and a 22/4 touchdown to interception ratio. While he missed two games due to a COVID-19 diagnosis the games that Lawrence did play in he had spectacular performances.
Kyle Trask started at Florida this season after being a backup to Felippe Franks his first three years. In his first year as starter (at the time of voting) had thrown for 4125 yards, averaging 10.1 yards per pass. He has broken personal records, school records and conference records all season, after throwing 416 yards in the Ole Miss game this season he broke the all-time UF record for yards in a conference game. Trask has a 69.7% completion rate and a 43/5 touchdown to interception ratio. Leading the Gators to a New Years 6 bowl and a conference title, Trask has shown his deservance to be in the Heisman conversation,
Mac Jones is a two year starter at Alabama with 3,739 passing yards and a 76.5 completion percentage. Jones has led the Tide to a 12-0 record, SEC championship and a national championship this season. He has a 32 to 4 touchdown to interception ratio. Jones is one part of the 3 headed monster on the Bama offense leading them to their great success this season.
Devonta Smith wide receiver and another part of the three headed monster at Alabama is the only non quarterback finalist this year. He has 98 receptions on the season with 1,511 yards on those receptions. Smith also is a kickoff and punt returner for the Tide, on returns he has 245 yards. Giving him a total of 1,767 yards at the time of voting. He averages 15.8 yards per play and 160 all purpose yards per game. This season he has scored 22 touchdowns with 20 receiving, 1 rushing and 1 off a return.
The Heisman trophy will be presented virtually on January 5, 2021 at 7pm ET on ESPN.
