Volcano Eruption In Japan May Have Left More Than 30 Dead

Hundreds of hikers had gone out to Mount Ontake to enjoy the lovely fall weather in central Japan over the weekend. But their weekend soon turned into disaster when Mount Ontake erupted, trapping and possibly killing upwards of 30 hikers.

Mount Ontake erupted this past weekend and has potentially left more than 30 people dead. Climbers were found near the peak of the mountain on saturday and Japanese authorities are making serious efforts to rescue the victims.

According to USA Today, “a massive rescue effort involving more than 1,000 soldiers, police and firefighters” is underway at the mountain, about 160 miles west of Tokyo.

According to The Independent, the hikers found at the peak were suffering from “cardiopulmonary arrest.” In other words, they weren’t breathing and their hearts had stopped

This volcano hasn’t had a major eruption since October of 1979. On Sunday, thick plumes of steam were still exuding from the peak and there are still victims to be found.

An effort is underway to discover how many people exactly are still stuck in the debris. This unfortunate incident has lead the Japanese government to speed up efforts to predict volcanic eruptions and warn hikers about said eruptions.

As of late, rescue efforts have been interrupted by an incoming typhoon.  The said typhoon has been reported to have winds up to 252 km/h.

We can only hope that any survivors are found soon.
