Person of the Year Goes to Greta Thunberg

The 16-year-old activist gained recognition this year with her impassioned demands for governments to take far-reaching action to address climate catastrophe.

The teenage climate sensation Greta Thunberg has received a lot of support from the media. Many well-known figures in media are congratulating and appreciating her on twitter.

Some of the media seems to agree with the decision of Time Magazine, but the other side of the media thinks Thunberg deserves no such award.

One of the biggest protesters of her new title is president Donald Trump. He claims that it is “ridiculous”. He also argues that Thunberg needs to work on her “Anger Management problem”, which some of the media found ironic.

Nonetheless, Time magazine believes she earned the right to be named Person of the Year. Thunberg “has succeeded in creating a global attitudinal shift, transforming millions of vague, middle-of-the-night anxieties into a worldwide movement calling for urgent change,” Time said.

In May of this past year she was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, as a reward for her effortless and passionate strides taken since 2018.

She first began a lone protest outside Sweden’s parliament at the age of 15 declaring that she would refuse to attend school on Fridays until the government started working on resolving the growing climate and ecological crisis.

Her speech at the UN general assembly was perhaps one of the most eye catching of her protests, because she directly attacked the government, saying that all those who are avoiding the issue of the climate crisis have “stolen [her] dreams and [her] childhood with [their] empty words”.

After several strikes and speeches she evidently has caught the globe’s attention. But her movement is far from over. Greta Thunberg continues to hold climate strikes and lead the youth of the world toward change for the climate crisis.
