On February 1st in Melbourne, Australia, Carlos Alcaraz made history becoming the youngest player to ever complete the Career Slam as he defeated Novak Djokovic in 4 sets.
Alcaraz won his first major title in 2022 with the US Open. He then went on in 2023 to win the Wimbledon. In 2023, the player won both the Wimbledon and the French Open. In order to complete the Career Slam, Alcaraz still needed the Australian Open, and this year, he got it.
The tournament drew millions of viewers, hoping to witness the historic event. Among those viewers were several WMC tennis fans, including seniors Marvin and Justin Du.
Both of the Du brothers were expecting an Alcaraz victory. “I wasn’t surprised [Alcaraz won], but I was surprised that Djokovic won a set” stated Marvin. Djokovic is a veteran on the court, but concerns about his age have been a common sentiment recently, catching many by surprise that he can still compete with the top younger players of today.
Many fans remained particularly impressed with the semifinals of the tournament this year. Jannik Sinner faced off against Djokovic in a thrilling 5 sets and Alexander Zverev played against Alcaraz in a stunning 5 hour and 27 minute match.
Several other big names competed in the tournament. The beloved American, Frances Tiafoe, was watched carefully throughout the tournament. Tiafoe had shown dominance in years past on hard surface as he reached the semifinals in the 2024 US Open so it came as a surprise when he didn’t do as well as expected. “I thought he was going to go further because he got further in the U.S. Open before” stated Justin.
The Australian Open left nothing to be desired. The tournament provided twists, turns and excitement throughout and a dominant winner. Despite this year’s incredible amount of talent, it is clear that tennis is now in the age of Carlos Alcaraz.
