Since its release in November of 2025, Heated Rivalry has taken the world by storm. It’s an intense and passionate storyline about two hockey players named Shane Hollander and Ilya Rosanov. The two are on rivaling teams for years as they slowly kindle their relationship.
Ilya is from Russia, a country where queer people aren’t easily accepted for who they are. He has to struggle through his family’s homophobic treatment towards him, all while battling his undeniable feelings for Shane. Shane’s family may be more accepting, but the world isn’t.
These athletes, as well as their teammates, feel like they’re unable to come out because of what their country’s or what their fans might think.
Although she isn’t the biggest fan of hockey, WMC Sophomore Evelyn Valencia finds this topic to be extremely moving. She found interest in Heated Rivalry after its popular debut and, much like the internet, prefers Ilya and Shane’s story to other characters’ storylines. In her words, the plot was “entertaining” and “addictive.”
After learning about hockey players feeling brave enough to share their own stories, Valencia expressed her hope that it would spread into other sports. “I would love it to [continue],” she stated. She wishes that “more people can feel comfortable in doing something they love.”
Another sophomore at WMC, Anna Sachko, watched the show along with Valencia. She believes that the topic of athletes feeling comfortable enough to come out is extremely important to the sports community. Sachko also recognizes that there are downsides to coming out, due to seeing the backlash online that the show has received because of its queer storyline. “I wish people didn’t take it as seriously when people had more confidence to come out,” Sachko stated.
Hopefully, athletes in all kinds of sports gain more recognition and confidence to come out. Social media makes it difficult for those to feel comfortable doing such things, but if more queer supportive art comes out, it can make communities more welcoming.
