On the morning of the 27th of February, at the 7:35 bell, music filled the halls of West Morris Central. “Staying Alive” by The Bees Gees echoed throughout the school as students made their way to class.
Students’ necks craned up towards the loudspeakers in disbelief. Some danced, some sang, but it was clear that the music had an impact. Just a minor change in the morning routine made waves around the school, and brightened days for students and teachers alike.
Despite only being played during passing time, the spontaneity of the music still managed to excite everyone, including some seniors in particular. Both Sania Madane and Evan Weinberger are seniors who were present on that Friday morning and had their day changed by the power of the loudspeaker. “It was a great change to my morning… I had a big test in English, at first period, and this music just put me in such a good mood for that test” Madane stated. She continued to explain that, to her, music is just a reminder to the brain to have a little fun. Madane felt as though the melodies should not end just that week, but rather become a weekly occurrence. But she wasn’t the only one who thought so. Evan Weinberger was also an avid voice for music to continue to fill the halls. “I was walking to gym class [on Friday], and I said to my friends, this [music] really, really brightens my mood” Weinberger stated.
Regardless of the motive behind why the music is played, the students of WMC are loving it. As long as music continues to brighten days, it should continue to echo throughout West Morris every morning passing time on Friday.
