From March 12-14, WMC Theater Department put on their production of the hit musical Sister Act, featuring Rishi Shah as Monsignor O’Hara. The musical follows aspiring performer Deloris Van Cartier as she joins a convent after witnessing her mob-boss boyfriend murder someone.
As she’s in the convent and introducing more engaging music to her fellow nuns, one of the most accepting characters is Monsignor O’Hara.
WMC freshman Rishi Shah plays this bright and enthusiastic character who never hesitated to dance along with his nuns after Deloris took control of the choir. Although he’s played big roles before in his middle school years, he holds his Monsignor role close to his heart because he sees himself in him.
“I did take a few liberties as in making him more emotional than I think he was supposed to be played,” Shah stated. “I think that really worked for him…during a few songs like Sunday Morning Fever I really tried to go for more of the announcer vibe…still keeping that priest’s life present.”
Shah wishes for the audience to pick up on the themes and lessons portrayed throughout the musical.“I hope they take the message that no matter how far or deep you’re in it is never too late to find yourself,” he stated.
He found his experience to be one of the best “you could ever have in your life.” Shah recommends theater because of the familial relationships that are made along the way. He has no regrets and can’t wait for his future shows here at WMC!
