Every year for the spring musical, interested students audition to be a part of what is called the Pit which is an extremely important part of the production of the musical.
WMC Sophomore Kaila “Kai” Libert has been involved in theater productions since middle school. They had roles in both cast and crew, and found interest in doing music for the show this year. “I loved the concept of being able to play live music for the shows,” Libert stated.
The biggest challenge that they had to face in this new role was playing a normal clarinet, which they had not done in years. “There was definitely a learning curve,” they claimed. “But after a bit I’ve gotten the hang of it.” Libert also had to learn a new style of music, because the songs that are typically played in band are not of the musical-theater genre.
The Pit learned 30 pieces of music in just about two months. That time crunch made learning time management really important for Libert and their fellow players.
“Being in pit requires a lot of hard work and time commitment to both the rehearsals and practice hours,” Libert stated. “But if someone is willing to do that, then I definitely recommend that they sign up.”
WMC wishes them good luck in their future performances on March 12, 13, and 14!
