The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on the book trilogy of the same name, has been a summer time craze since it premiered in June 2022. The brother centric love triangle split viewers from the start creating a captive audience. The show revolves around a young girl named Belly, an ironic nickname that many viewers have come to make fun of. During the summer of her 16th birthday she comes back to her family friend’s beach house, as she does every summer, and begins to attract the attention of two brothers, her childhood best friend Jeremiah and her childhood crush Conrad. The show’s beach setting, catchy soundtrack, and captivating love triangle made it an instant hit with fans.
This show’s third and final season has been coming out weekly on Wednesday at 3am EST since July 17th. Originally meant for teens, it has spread across all age groups as women and men of all ages have shared their opinions online. This show has become what one could say is this generation’s love triangle phenomenon. The finale aired at 3 am EST on September 17th and the show has officially come to an end. However that night at the premiere the author Jenny Han announced that The Summer I Turned Pretty the Movie will be released, coming as a surprise and relief for many fans left wondering about certain plot points.
This show has included many fantastic songs that have quickly become fan favorite moments, this was no exception for the finale. This final episode’s discography included “Dress” and “Out of the Woods” by Taylor Swift, and “Scott Street” by Phoebe Bridgers. This is possibly a call back to the song “Funeral” by Phoebe Bridgers as the last song in season 1 that was from the same album. Also including many French songs to add to the French vibe when in Paris.
West Morris Central senior Ali Irmer has been watching The Summer I Turned Pretty since season 1, and was very pleased seeing the final episode with the couple she’s been rooting for since the beginning finally ending up together. “ I think obviously the ending, because I think Bonrad is the endgame. They’re meant to be together, and I think because of the build up to the finale when they finally got together” Irmer said.
Junior Sara Czajkowski was very excited when asked what she thought of the final episode and the soundtrack of both the finale and the show as a whole. “I liked how they included a lot of Taylor Swift because not a lot of shows have her songs in them, so that was really cool” Czajkowski said. She also expressed her excitement over the upcoming movie saying it will bring the story full circle and tie up any loose ends.
With the conclusion of The Summer I Turned Pretty many viewers are sad over the loss of their favorite summer show. However, the movie is a welcome addition and all the people who loved the show are waiting patiently for the next installment of the story.
