On September 4th, 2025, the highly anticipated video game Hollow Knight: Silksong was released. After the success of the original game, Hollow Knight fans had waited for over 6 years since the sequel’s announcement in 2019.
In Hollow Knight: Silksong, the player explores a distant land of bugs and beasts as the fierce princess, Hornet. At the time of release, widespread traffic to storefronts such as Steam and the Nintendo Eshop led to server outages, although a peak of over 500,000 concurrent players was reached on Steam. Players have praised the game’s hand-drawn art style, orchestral score, and fast-paced gameplay, although some have criticized its increased difficulty.
Computer Science teacher Mr. Maier is a fan of the series and played the first Hollow Knight in 2017, saying that the expansive world, memorable characters, and incredible art stuck with him. He gave his opinion on the wait for Silksong’s release, saying that he was glad that the developers could take their time, and “In an industry that’s been in turmoil recently with huge layoffs and studio closings across the biggest publishers, it is heartening to hear a story about developers who managed to find a system that works.”
In regards to the sequel itself, he feels that at times it is more “all gas no brakes” and is missing some of the quieter moments its predecessor had. Additionally, WMC senior Sophia Pulido praised Hollow Knight’s playstyle and graphics, while saying that “you cannot forget about the music.” She hasn’t begun Silksong, but hopes that the two games “line up really well.”
Hollow Knight: Silksong has been widely praised by critics, and currently has a 91% positive rating on Steam while costing far less than other titles by larger companies – a sign of a possible shift in the industry.
