As summer fades and the first few weeks of school kickoff, a sense of anticipation fills the air for the 2025 volleyball season at West Morris Central. The hard work and dedication put in during the off seasons are put to the test in the first practices, tryouts, and scrimmages. The athletes set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable season full of personal and team growth, competition, and passion for the game.
At West Morris Central, tradition runs deep within the players and coaches. For returning players, the start of the season brings a renewed sense of teamwork as they get hyped for another year. They’ve already established chemistry with coaches and teammates and know what it takes to compete on a high level. They are the role models younger girls look up to. Spirit days give chances for newcomers to bond with the team, empower and bring a sense of community to the court. “The kids, we have a great group of girls, you know? They work hard. They like to have fun at the same time. So it makes coaching enjoyable” Head Coach Balella stated.
The pursuit of excellence is a driving force for all levels, and the coaches are the helping hands that make it all happen. Head Coach Balella says “focus every practice and try to improve on weaknesses while maintaining the strengths.” With the guidance of experienced coaches, balancing being a student and an athlete becomes light work for everyone in the program.
Even with success as the goal, learning how to deal with losing is equally as important as taking wins humbly. to WMC athletes. “We’re not going to win every game, but we could compete every game. So if we can compete, I find that to be a successful game, win or lose” continued Coach Balella. Athletes are often faced with hardship and their coaches are the backbone of their decision to succeed. JV Coach Stingle said “As long as they’re doing their best and trying their hardest, then that’s a success for me.”
Coaches and players alike recognize that even when their team does not come back victorious, it is simply a part of the journey of improvement. The ever ambitious WMC Varsity volleyball team hopes to make an appearance at the state’s tournament this year, taking the crown for a community win.
