In the current offseason of the National Hockey League (NHL), Mitch Marner, a right winger on the Toronto Maple Leafs was traded. There have been rumors circulating since the end of the 24-25 season that he wasn’t going to resign with the Leafs. He ultimately agreed on an eight year, $96 million, 12 million AAV(Average Annual Value) lasting through the 2032-33 season with the Vegas Golden Knights.
He is 28 years old weighing 175 pounds at 6 feet tall. He was born on May 5, 1997. He grew up a passionate Leafs fan in Thornhill, Toronto. He played for hockey teams in Vaughan, Don Mills, and Clarrington before making it to the OHL (Ontario Hockey League).
He was drafted 4th overall in the 2015 draft. Before he was drafted he played for the London Knights (OHL). He led them to the Memorial Cup championship and that gained him recognition at his young age. In his last season before starting in the NHL he played 57 games with 166 points (39 goals, 77 assists).
His rookie season in 2016-17 he played 77 games and got 61 points. Also that year he had his career high penalty minutes at 38 minutes. He averaged 16:49 minutes per game.
He played 9 seasons for the Toronto Maple Leafs and played in 70 playoff games. He also played 657 games on the Leafs. He got 741 points (221 goals, 520 assists) in his time during the Leafs. He currently has 37 game winning goals with a 20:04 average time on ice.
Lily Krauer, a NHL fan who is a junior at WMC thinks Marner has a positive impact on the NHL and is important for a team’s success. “I think he’s a very good right winger and he’s good at scoring goals,”’ Krauer said. ” He also worked well with Auston Matthews and other players when he played on the Leafs, and because of their great chemistry and trust, they were able to score as many goals as possible” She explained further that Marner was really good for the Leafs and surely had a very big part in getting them to the playoffs all 9 years he played with them.
Julia Dybas, A junior at WMC who is a big NHL fan who knows a lot about Marner and understands how big of an impact his career has on the NHL explains how Marner has a better chance of winning the Stanley Cup with his new team and he has a great chance of doing really well this season on and off the ice. “I think it’ll really impact his career,” Dybas said. “He moved his whole family out there. I think he just wants to be happier, the media in Toronto really was not nice to him. I think he wants to go to a place where he can feel safe, and happy. He seems to like the team that he got traded to, that’s clear. The season started. He’s playing well.” She explained how things are going to be different in the future and he’s had a great career so far and he surely has a lot going great for him at the moment.
Mitch Marner has only been on the Knights for a couple of weeks now but he sure has made an impact. If he keeps this up with no injuries he could achieve many more things in his career.
