On November 4th, 2025, New York City had one of its most historic elections. New Yorkers elected the first democratic socialist into mayoral office. This holds historical precedent as it marks one of the most important and defining mayoral campaigns and terms of all time, ultimately deciding the future of democratic socialism in America.
Senior Jack Labar has followed this election closely and thinks it heavily impacts America. Labar says, “ Politics swings between extremes, and this election shows dissatisfaction with the conservative status quo and a shift toward an alternative. It reflects frustration with the current executive office and a desire for change.” Mamdani had the majority vote, meaning that even if any straggler or third-party voters had voted for Cuomo, Mamdani would still have won. This shows how it’s not just the younger or older generations who feel one way or another, but there is a broad feeling of dissatisfaction.
Labar also stated that, “social media has had a huge impact, especially on younger voters…The standout was Zoran Mamdani. He used Instagram and TikTok incredibly effectively. Labar highlights the focus that Zohran really tapped into social media and used it to his advantage in this election. “His age helped; he’s in touch with younger audiences and understands the influence social media has on them.” His media presence was curated perfectly, representing fresh, clean design on his posts and marketing that simultaneously paid homage to hand-painted signs of old N.Y.C.
Sophomore Caroline Haas has found this election interesting and said, “I think it shows that we’re experiencing an uphill battle with the kinds of things he stands for, like lowering grocery prices and housing costs. People are pushing for those changes”. Haas highlights an important factor of the rising cost of living that almost everyone is feeling; however, those feelings are most certainly exaggerated in New York.
Zohran Mamdhani is currently in his transition period, where he is looking for donations to support his transition. This is something unprecedented, as in the past, Mayors would take endorsements and funds from large companies. Mamdani will be sworn in shortly after January 1, 2026
